Is There a Connection Between COVID and Chronic Fatigue?
A team of researchers has recently published a new article that has made a correlation between symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome, otherwise known as myalgic encephalomyelitis, and lingering symptoms of the COVID-19 virus. In it, the researchers suggest that the similar symptoms may both involve the immune response of the body when it encounters infection or other types of environmental hazards.
In their study published in August, the research team highlights evidence observed in both lingering COVID-19 symptoms, or long COVID, and chronic stress of other varied biological disorders. The team found that cells behave a certain way when they collect too many oxygen molecules. This is called oxidative stress or redox imbalance. This imbalance may be connected to the inflammation that is seen in both diseases.
Finding Answers May Shed Light on Other Diseases
The team is urging further funding and study of both long COVID and chronic fatigue. They hope that this will help us understand these and other diseases that involve oxidative stress and inflammation. Researchers also hope that this will spur more research on both diseases to enable us to better understand and treat them.
Can You Claim Disability For Either Long COVID or Chronic Fatigue?
Individuals who suffer from chronic fatigue syndrome understand how their symptoms can significantly interfere with their lives. Those suffering from long COVID-19 symptoms are finding the same. While symptoms can be treated, the resulting fatigue and brain fog can greatly affect work and other responsibilities.
Disability claims require a medical diagnosis and ongoing care by a professional. The unfortunate thing is that there is no way to measure chronic fatigue objectively. Additionally, disability insurers can claim recovery in the case of COVID-19, despite the long-term symptoms. This is frustrating for those whose lives are seriously impacted.
